So I never use my nehants outside of adventure but a team of nehants guems do work: Anagram, Carkass, and The Shadow, Lady of Nehant do work.
Breaking the first chain will work with any of them. However only The Shadow has enough spirit to make Corruption of the Soul useful.

Hundawa+Wreckwood+Keizan Warrior evo or World-Tree mage for stronger synergy with Wild Buds and some weapons like Squasher ot Perforator is rather fast option too, and i think that it is cheaper than fire guems+spells

Compendium with Shadow mages, magic study+Ice crystals compendium, demon hunters and world tree are all good bets.

with compendium dragon gueam i seem to be bugged: oracle with 2 magic studies from previous turn, i equip 2x ice crystals (4 spirit since hav prophet and was turn 4) ending up dealing 7phis damage due to opp's defense, and then 10 mag (opp had 0 spirit) and got no points from that

not during this event since was the 2nd time during it and am sure wasn't the person i played vs right before
Edit: seems fixed, did it again but worked fine this time.
2nd edit, seems if you cause damage effects of a spell but don't play one in that turn (aka magic studies fight 1 and ice crystals x2 on fight 2) you get no points, just noticing for others who may have tried the same
3rd edit(yea lots of em xD): if you use AoE DoT such as crystal storm the 6 dmg (2dmg x 3 chracters) dealt at the begin of the turn will count towards the magic damage but don't forget using a draconic spell (the pen is mightier...than the sword, last word, last action) together with any phisical booster you can otherwise you get no points (even if you'd make 20/20 dmg.

I was getting 25-35 per game with Shadow Mages.
Abyssien/Kuraying = Black Hand + Magic Attack/Than the Sword
Alyce = Never Lonely + Than the Sword

It's fixed but not completely... I'm using [card]Oracle[/card], [card]Anryena[/card] and [card]Kounok[/card] and normally playing from 8 to 12 Draconic Spells per game and still only getting only 7 points maximum each time.
I'm guessing one of these characters or some of the spells I'm using is still bugged.

Ice Crystals, Magic Servant, Affinity and such aren't Spells.
Beyond Vision is Mental.
It's possible that spells played by Illumination don't count, due to how lovely the mechanics are.
