Don't pick it. It always loses. Magic does no damage and everyone else gets bonus attack against you. Replace deck is very technical with Deck is for masochists. Or does the technical part mean you can't win without technical difficulty by opponent. I can't win and my level keeps going up from losing so I fight harder and harder decks.
currently losing my way to 1200 crystals for a different starter...

Syneris, it's not that hard to win with Noz starter.
Any of the 3 decks can use a few cards from the market, some of them very cheap.
I remember getting more [card]Guardian's Benediction[/card] and [card]Illusory Reflection[/card] very early - my starter was Noz.
Another thing to point out: Pure Mages (Pilkim) gain chain on spells, but if you use a damage spell (including Static Charge) you won't attack that same turn with a pure Mage.
So mixing [card]Than the Sword[/card] with [card]Fireball[/card] simply doesn't work.
Warrior/Marauder-Hybrid Mages (Moira) do not gain chain on spells, but you can attack and cast any spell on the same turn.
So usually I dumped Smoked Arrow into Moira, and let Pilkim handle the Spirit-modified spells like Than the Sword, Fireball, Static Charge and Lightning Bolts.
If you plan to purchase Feez, I'd replace the 3 toons with market-versions so u can later sell them if u want (can't sell starter cards)
I'd also replace Aez as soon as possible with... Anazra (very cheap atm), Eglantyne (not so cheap), Bomzar or one of the cheap mages like Alishk or Aerouant.
Having Bomzar, Aerouant and Pilkim is a good beginner combo.

Noz starter deck is the most difficult deck to begin with, and you have to spend some money on it. The good part is that you learn a lot with this deck, you learn how to use magic effectively and learn how to defend yourself without relying on the printed defense score of your characters...

Thanks for the tips. I switched to Kotoba and can win most of my matches, but I'd like to try Noz again sometime. What's weird is that most the upgrades I see for mages don't increase spirit. Warriors get a progressive increase in damage, but mages stay the same?

Yeah it happens sometimes, but in the future you will see some kicka** mages

Mages have The Last Word, Overwhelming Victory (courtesan) or a character named Prophet (which increases Noz spirit +1)
Thats why Councelor Ishaia is the best character in the game
