Small Things Writer Tournament organized by the Consortium

Small things Tournament

The Consortium clan set up a writer tournament. The Objective is to write a story about the Eredan ITCG universe. The tournament is open to anyone able to write in English or French.

The universe is full of small things that the Big Story never takes in account.

It’s up to you to create the small thing which will make us dreamt and which will make you win:

1st Prize: 30 000cx + 1 card “Render Foil” + 1 booster of 12 cards Act 2+3 + The winning story displayed on the wiki and on the forum

2nd Prize: 20 000cx + 1 booster of 12 cards Act 2+3 + the story displayed on the wiki and on the forum

3rd Prize: 10 000cx + 1 booster of 4 cards + the story displayed on the wiki and on the forum

The 7 next text will be posted on the forum in a dedicated post.

Rules:

The story must be written in no more than 8 000 signs. (spaces included)
It must take place in the Eredan universe and in his history.
It should not override the story written by Dimizar.
It should not invent a past or a future too definitive for the characters designed by Dimizar (No sudden death, no secret wedding, and no secrets child… at least for the characters on the cards).

You can start from a card or a fiction situation.

Example of cards:
- Hallucination
- … Will be your GRAVE !
- Assassination (No collector Version)
- Above the law
- Bushido Code
- Potato-Peeling Duty
- Root
- Pacification

Example of situations:

- The story of a Tsousaï monk from his point of view describing the departure of Toran to become regent in Meragi
- The life of an innkeeper seeing some Witchblades coming in his inn.
- The story of the librarian giving some books to Sevilath
- The story of a fruits salesman seeing his first Nomad
- The tormenting night of a Compendium’s student before his final exam to become mage.
- A fight in a pub somewhere in the White Isles between pirates.
- The hunt of any prey by an Elfine in the forest at the sunset.
- The kid astonished by Telendar Dagger skills during a Zil show
- The story of the man who have eaten the best noodles of his life, Ramen noodles of course.

Nothing that changes the life of the characters, but small things about the world.
A lot of small things just besides the Big History, which is property of Dimizar alone.

The story can be written in English or French, no other language are allowed.

The jury is formed by:
- Zayox3
- Luxo2011
- Zurga
- Dimizar

The stories will be noted by the following marking scheme:

- Inventiveness of the story (7 points)
- Link and respect to the Eredan History (5 points)
- Style of writing (5 points)
- Spelling (3 points)

For the spelling, the jury can put some negative points if the text is too difficult to understand.

The story should be sent before the 20th of June 2011 by mail to:

tournoidespetitsriens@laposte.net

Results will be available the 1st of July 2011

Just to give an idea of the length of the text, 8000 characters spaces included correspond to more or less two DinA4 pages written in Times New Roman font 12.

Yes, you can.
The members of the jury have very limited skills in others languages (me first), so we limit the available languages to French and English.
We will be happy to receive stories from anyone able to write one in French or English.

All theses stories are already written by Eredan's writer Dimizar.
you can find all of them in French here:

My story is a bit below 12k symbols. >_> Is it such a big deal to stay within 8000?

Not a big deal, but, we prefer to be closer of 8000 symbols.
If you submit a story of 8010, this will not be eliminatory.
The length of the story is also one of the difficulty of the exercise wink

Re : Small Things Writer Tournament organized by the Consortium

8000 symbols is pretty short to create a short story even. I'd submit mine, but it is well around 11600 symbols long. If it is too long, I wont even bother.

Hello Zurga,

Why not have a range between 8k -12K tops?

I think this is a great idea and also fantastic opportunity for players to express themselves.

Although I agree that limiting words is a challenge and a good exercise, I think that more participants would take part in this event with a tiny bit more freedom and range I would say.

Of course, this is organized by you and your team. Just my mere opinion.
I do not want to overstep my bounds.

Regards

Re : Small Things Writer Tournament organized by the Consortium

We will not disqualify anyone who submit a text too long.
The length of text will impact the notation.
We ask for brief texts, this is a component of the tournament.
The writer has to focus on what is important for his story and how he can put things together to make a text into the limits.

Perhaps we will make another time another event like this with unlimited length or where more longer texts will be allowed.

Looks like I am out. tongue Usually contests have people write longer texts instead of brief and short ones so they put effort and time into it. But I guess the other way around works as well. Good luck to the short short story writers out there! big_smile

Re : Small Things Writer Tournament organized by the Consortium

Hi Dantesan,

Just to complete the words of Zurga, the point isn't to decide whether 4000, 8000, 12000 or 20000 words, we just had to put a limit to give rules to the tournament.

And don't forget that the consortium members are players smile no staff members, so we take on us to read every texte carefully and to give the same attention to all writers, but it shouldn't be our one and only hobby during the next month smile

Perfection is to put in 8000 words what you could have done in 20.000, but with the same quality smile

Send your text anyway, if the quality of the story and the respect to Dimizar's universe are there, you can win even if your text is too long.

Re : Small Things Writer Tournament organized by the Consortium

A range should be expressed, though, so we all know what is legit and what isn't.

I think it should be something along the lines of 8000 +/- 1000 are in, under 7000 and over 9000 (heh) begin losing points, but can still win.

We put a range 8000 signs.
Too long text is impacted on style (5 points max)

So we can create new characters in the story, so to speak, without messing with the official story of Eredan?

Yes, you can create new characters.
The best stories are when new characters are mixed with existing ones with the respect of the story and the universe.

You have until 20th June to send us your text.

Re : Small Things Writer Tournament organized by the Consortium

I have submitted my story.
Haven't had alot of time, not even sure if it's what you're looking for, but I enjoyed writing it.

Not sure how small importance a short story needs to have.
Mine does affect a known character, but not in a way that changes his official story - instead it opens plot possibilities by being compatible with the official story, as little far as I know.

The subject has my name - Nurvus - in it.
