It's a known visual bug

Deirf Geiss is level 2 with 0xp (not lvl1 like usual), so you need to accumulate 480 xp to move him from level 2 to level 3.

But as you get him with no xp at all, you'll need to get at least 160xp (fictive lvl 1 to 2) to see the xp bar appearing, if i'm remembering correctly

He have no XP bar because he begin with level 2.
You have to put 480XP on it to be ready to evolve it.
This is a known bug with characters dropped from adventure mode.
If I remember well, you can see the current XP of the character when you put your mouse on the place where the XP bar should be.

Thanks for the tip... i think hes at 160 now cause i played him together with his weapons >_<
