Newbie Deck Advice Please

Hey,

Apologies if this should have been posted in the general discussion section rather than here, but anyway...

I signed up to Eredan earlier this week and have found it quite entertaining. A few more games and I'll have access to the market (I could originally access it at Level 6, but lately it's been telling me I need to play 30 games), so I was hoping for some advice on how to proceed to make a reasonably competitive deck.

I'm willing to spend a little bit of cash, such as getting a starter and a couple of boosters, but would prefer to limit it as much as possible, especially at this early stage.

So basically before I spend some money and then discover I've got a dysfunctional deck anyway I'd appreciate any advice in the following vein...

1) What are the cheap but competitive decks out there? (mid-level, obviously I'm not expecting to dominate all-comers on a budget).

2) Given card values are any of the starters particularly worth/not-worth it? (I was considering desert nomad priests, mercenaries or the pack, but am open to suggestions)

3) So far the following appeal to me - witchblades (but a quick glance of these forums suggest they are overplayed and universally hated so I'm reconsidering that), desert priests (are these viable on a budget?), or some kind of warrior/marauder item-based theme. Again though I've very little knowledge of the possibilities, having only been exposed to other newbies so far, so open to anything...

4) A bit of a side question really - how much would you say the weight is on deck-building versus effective use of a deck i.e. do certain decks just always beat other decks, or are there quite a few decks out there where victory or defeat depends on how well you out-think your opponent during the actual gameplay? Are there particular decks that cater to the second option?

Sorry for the length, and thanks in advance for any replies.

GKZ

p.s. Is it worth spending crystals on all 3 of the 'free' starters or better to save them for market use?

1)kotoba can provide you with some really cheap an good decks out there: like warriors, crow and trackers(especially the human ones). but in alternative you can also make a basic desert nomads priests or even noz mages
2)the starting boosters arent worthy in my opinion because of their price
3)I, personally, dont hate the witchblades but most people do and i already talked about nomad priests, about marauders and warriors:
warriors: most of the best warriors are provided by the kotoba, you can always join furagu, xin and asajiro, this would be a good strategie since they back each other up
marauders: the best ones might the zil warriors ones since they have an enormous attack power and decent def and spirit. the other ones are pirates (personaly, my favorite strategie) who can attack characters outsie the field allowing for good manipulation of the battle flow
4)of course every deck has its weak point and obviously the result also depends how you do during the gameplay, so i would say that is equaly important how you build the deck and how you play it

hope this helped

spending crystals on all 3 of the 'free' starters deck ( noz, zil, kotoba ) is quite worth it, you can get free assassination and also free fireball from them, smile

for the other starter decks, some people on the forum think that they're a bit overpriced, though some have good cards, like the mercenaries one, and some just plain bad, like the pirates one smile

Re : Newbie Deck Advice Please

When i was newbie i had a lot of trouble choosing a deck... i went from noz mages, dragon knight to quick draw deck... but i never completed them cause i never liked them so much as i loved my nomad priest deck.

First you have to know the game mechanincs, how mages work, the randomness of the game and other staff. You should buy the packs you can buy with crystal, they will teach you how to play with warrior, marauders and mages. But there are a lot of things you miss. The fact is that you go to the elo rooms and see the best of the best: Quickdraws, Circus, witchblades, etc. You have to taste a fight against a lot of players to finally decide which deck do you like. You can check this section of the forum to know more stuff

if you want to try something on a budget try a Dragon Knight or Kotoba Warriors deck.  both are good and will be decently competetive.

I was unaware the components for a Dragon Knight deck dropped in price so low for it to be considered a 'budget' deck.

Re : Newbie Deck Advice Please

dragon knights can be a budget deck and still be effective.  You just have to use some of the better budget cards and build a deck with them instead of the standard fair.  or he could spend a little money and buy the starter (i havent bought or looked at it in the marketplace to see what is in it yet.)

not every deck has to mirror every other of that type.  a little imagination and creativity can help come up with a budget deck that can compete quite well.
