Abyssiens Shadow

What exactly are his hidden effects and how do they work?

I was experimenting with fighting him on my avalonians and I'm just confused at the moment. I find my self having to discard cards but sometimes it will say 3 but not make me discard 3. And other times i find myself healing where I shouldn't be.

Someone wanna shed some light on how his mechanics work?
