I gave more damage than my opponent and yet he received 2 life.
My character: Fenrat, 14 life, 2 def, took 8 damage
His character: Akustai, 13 life, 2 def, took 9 damage

No. The round finished with Fenrat 6 HP and Akutsai 4 HP, then he got 2 HP from the dagger.
He only used Life devourer in that round.

If he only used life devourer, how was it active? Are you sure he didn't use[card] Keep Your Guard Up[/card] to activate it immediately? Keep your guard up gives an additional 2hp at the end of the round.

ive seen living dagger start activating immediately for some reason, no other cards being played with it

Doesn't one version of that dagger give out two life on activation?
I'm guessing your opponent activated the card on that turn, and at the end he got +2 life for activating the card. Not for doing more damage.
