Thank you guys for the lovely feedback, its great to know that I'm not the only one who is taking Eredan's movements badly.

@Zurga:

I agree with the cycle of how players with legendary cards, too, will get bored of the game and strive to find a fun deck to play with, the creative team in Eredan, admittedly, have amazing ways of using the mechanics many people easily overlook to create unique gameplay for every deck in game - however, the effectiveness of each deck? There have been builds given so much attention and there have been castes that have little to no place in ELO, its almost depressing to have an almost completely predictable curve in tourneys, there's no thrill if I know I'm going to see a Compendium deck half the time.

And what of those without legendary cards? Non-legendary decks can fight against legendary decks with a little luck and high effectiveness (in this sense, I am very much in love with my merc decks), but there will always be a brick wall, ESPECIALLY when (as stated by Nurvus) there is a constant power creep that will discourage players from sticking to their favorite builds and strive to buy enough booster packs to stand a chance to get a legendary.

There's no hate here, I'm trying to see how the power creep would EVER be such an effective move for long term marketing. But your commentary is more than welcome smile

@Karnoki

I'm finding it very hard to believe the new cards help build a balance against other decks, if anything, its only setting a higher standard that older players would be trampled by. Catch the latest trend and wham! You'll see victory (and with it, a large number of benefits) and the richer become richer and the poorer either give up or remain stagnant.

@Nurvus

Do I get a free drink or a car sticker or something? Hahaha!

It's great to see such good criticism coming from your way - the power creep point you had is very effective, and your solutions are very welcome, it fixes the crystal economy and makes the game manageable for both the casual and hardcore gamer. Your thread speaks a sound point.

@Stormholt

Aren't we paying customers as well? And don't they understand FTP players are like free publicity for them? It's such an effective method of advertising! Low bandwidth requirement - making it easy to play outside; you have no idea how many of my collegemates stared at Eredan and walked away the moment they heard that the price for one booster pack is sizable to one day's worth of allowance.

The long-term will lose out because of the lack of balance in a game.

@ioxygen

And I can't agree more, I turn on my Eredan game now just to stare at the screen and then close ultimately, feeling the pointlessness of the game because there is no progression anymore.

EDIT: Until then, I have guild wars 2, and real life. hmm

Being an avid gamer for the most part, I was very happy to hear that there exists an iTCG with a load of potential to grow. I joined Eredan during the Mekalchemia event and I was instantly hooked, no joke, just. HOOKED.

I got my friends into it and we all had a blast while it lasted - we even spent a pretty penny (okay, maybe a plenty) on the game. Unfortunately the recent updates have been more than disappointing. Before you start thinking that this is a "HUR DUR EREDEHN SURKZ" thread - no, I believe this game has a load of potential seeing its pulling power, but there's so much more that can be done to even give this game a bit of a cult following.

1) The new cards in contrast to the older ones.

The new cards are horrendous not because they are 'OVERPOWERED OMG WTF' but because they have very little relevance with older cards, as well as a large number of other cards being completely neglected and losing the potential to create different, varied decks which are both fun, challenging and balanced.

Newer cards are focused on making a game fast, to the point, and pulling out other cards to make your win that much faster - now, I may not have that much experience in Eredan, but from what I know before this the only deck which worked fast and killed fast were the Elfines. This ruins the fun factor for people who are passionate about strategy and enjoying the ride of a card game. And unless you were a person only hoarding for wins - you would not feel any thrill from playing whether you were on the winning or losing end.

Also, the new legendary, Centorium Aurius, bloody hell can he be more frustrating? His chain action combined with the abilities of the Runic Legion deck gives him the Legendary standard that everyone was craving - but as time proved itself; dealing with that level of strength is both frustrating and pointless - Centorium Aurius creates a potential to win any game given the situation. As for other Legendaries; their weakness is so specific that people have to spend more money just to craft decks (that they may not aesthetically like) that stand a chance against ONE legendary. This throws the game off balance and destroys the standard of gaming for a lot of players. Speaking of legendaries, that would bring me to the next point.

2) The New Promotions

This is a current time thing, but what's been done has been done - the current megapack offers 1 guilded legendary GUARANTEED? With a fee (albeit not a small one) anyone can instantly jump to levels that other players will take ages to climb to; but then again, who is there left to fight? A short trip to the training room and level room today has proved my point - out of 5 players, I encountered 4 players who are training legendaries, and in the level room, almost everyone had a legendary. A person can only take so much loses and others can only take so much wins - what is there left once you're in the top except to wait for the next big thing to arrive? The game becomes a pointless grind to a top that you'll never achieve! And that brings me to my final point;

Name of the Game

Now for those who played (and are disappointed) in Diablo 3, you would understand my point here - What is the point of your game? Why throw a flimsy marketing ploy and create cards that are so OBVIOUSLY pandered to winning in the fastest way possible? Heck, most guilds who had a direction are losing theirs! Ask yourself - once you dominate ELO, get top spot, and then what?? There are little to no 'fun' builds (which from my experiences in other TCGs, were where the essence of social and casual gaming is) the trophy cards are losing its luster (White Witch, although fun, has no connection to any other deck. How the heck am I going to play her after grinding so much just to get her?) I'm not saying that things are imbalanced - seeing as yes, there are people who only want to win, who are competitive and that's okay; but what about the people who actually want to have fun? Who wants to experiment and try new combinations? (The last fun build that worked was Fog Hydra + Theya, which instantly had synergy, but what of everything else?)

I think Eredan has its potentials to be so much bigger - but in the long run if you're only going to rely on competitive spirit and providing easy to win solutions by throwing a huge wad of cash maybe once or twice. You won't last long. As newcomers would easily lose their motivation (which has been a problem for most friends whom I played with) and regulars who would have nothing else better to do but win win win, which would eventually burn off and as a result - lose a customer.

Anyway, this is just an opinion, of course, the reason I'm posting this here is to discuss  - feel free to post an opinion here, but of course, I'll only regard the constructive ones.

Feerik, it's sad because I love your game, I want to stay hooked to it, but these marketing ploys in both your purchased items and cards itself are spoiling the appetite of a small fanbase you have here. And I'm sure we're not the only one.

#3 Re : Deck and Strategy » Guild : The Mercenary » 15-11-2012 21:01:42

I/ The Mercenary

1-1 / Which mercenary's deck would you like to see put forward ? Why?

Honestly, I would love to see the non-caste Mercenary decks given some more love, Avalonians, Tempus and Ice Elves have unique gameplay styles and very interesting overall concepts, but the non-caste Mercenaries ([card]Fog Hydra[/card], The Elementals, and [card]Mystic Slayer's Shadow[/card]) doesn't work very well with other mercs nor do they with guilded cards.

1-2 / Which mercenary support characters do you use ? In which deck ?

I use [card]Fog Hydra[/card], [card]Water Elemental[/card], [card]Earth Elemental[/card], [card]Deirf Geis[/card] and the recent event cards. This is the kicker - aside from [card]White Witch[/card] who works with Noz (Seriously, besides [card]Elhoradana[/card], there is no non-caste, Mercenary mage except for [card]Ciramor[/card], and even he doesn't fit in very well with a lot of decks), all my decks who use these cards are pure Mercenary decks.

II / Avalonian

2-1 / What do you like in the Avalonians? What don't you like?

I love Avalonian's mechanic, its extremely unique and Feerik's creativity is something new to me - to use the leveling system as a battle mechanic is absolutely genius, in terms of gameplay, they are a fairly moderate challenge and a skilled Avalonian deck can sweep the floor.

What I don't like is the lack of personality in the Avalonians, they have cards designed for all kinds of situations if the buildup allows it. They are so reliant on their cards that anyone aside from [card]Aelide, Queen of Avalonia[/card] is rarely seen outside a pure Avalonian deck.

2-2 / Do you find Avalonian decks efficient ? In which compartments of the game and why ?

Great Avalonian decks work with strategy, adaptability and speed - in that turn, it makes them very efficient in the right hands, building up, discarding cards and surviving are all very strong points as determined by the player - like the RPG games they are modeled after, Avalonians rely heavily on the good judgement of the player to be strong.

2-3 / What are the strengths and weaknesses of Avalonian decks ?

I think the great strength about Avalonians are their adaptability, the quest action cards are designed for different situations (Just Cause being a great discard utility, Trial on the Bridge doing massive damage, etc.), and as said previously, an Avalonian deck's strengths rely mainly on the judgement of the player.

One weakness I do have to point out is as mentioned before - their reliance on cards, as stand alone characters they are rather weak, and if any buildup is denied they would surely lose.

2-4 / What would you like to see in Avalonian next release ?

Avalonian's in itself have very strong mechanics and is overall a very reasonable deck type, a legendary wouldn't solve anything, but I believe as the game furthers and becomes more competitive the decks will all have to follow suit

III / Tempus

3-1 / What do you like in the Tempus ? What don't you like?

Another unique deck which uses the turn counter to their advantage, its a double whammy when they deny all characters of their order bonuses, and its overall a very pleasing deck to look at.

I don't like the fact that the deck is rather reliant on its mages and priests, some Sands of Time style warrior Tempus stuff for [card]The Eternal[/card] would be pretty badass.

3-2 / Do you find Tempus decks efficient ? In which compartments of the game and why ?

Using their unique capabilities to literally bend time can help them control the game in a very unique way, in that sense they are efficient. Controlling and basically screwing their opponent's day over.

3-3 / What are the strengths and weaknesses of Tempus decks ?

Their capability to use the turn counter to their advantage is probably their biggest (and only) strength.

That would also factor in as their weakness, should they not be able to bend time to their liking, they would lose indefinitely.

3-4 / What would you like to see in Tempus next release ?

Some more warriors/marauders would be nice, maybe a Tempus weapon, that would be pretty badass too!

IV / Icy elves

4-1 / What do you like in the Icy elves ? What don't you like?

The Icy Elves' Berserker trait is really cool, and thats more or less about it - for a unique class they don't really show a lot of special traits, but they are a strong all-round deck.

4-2 / Do you find Icy elves decks efficient ? In which compartments of the game and why ?

I find them efficient but only in one gameplay format - this person does that and that person hits and thats about it, the Ice Elves are probably one of my least favorite decks in that sense.

4-3 / What are the strengths and weaknesses of Icy elves decks ?

Their berserker class and merc guild makes them insusceptible to certain disables and that's cool, they do crazy damage and their icy spells are scary.

But their weaknesses include having only one, straightforward game route - they have little to no space to adapt due to the lack of cards.

4-4 / What would you like to see in Icy elves next release ?

Try to give them some ability to adapt to situations, it makes them more competitive and strategic and overall that would be better.

V / Other Mercenary decks

2-1 / What do you like in the Other decks ? What don't you like?

I can't stress this enough when I say that there are little to NO synergy in a non-caste Merc series. Ciramor and White Witch don't really work together whereas Elhoradana is near impossible to get, Water Elemental really works on a stand alone basis, Deirf Geis needs other Merc warriors to kind of work, wait, where ARE the other Merc Warriors? Oh yeah, old event cards that either aren't as strong now as they would be back then, or just impossible to get. Who the hell works with Earth Elemental anyway? Fog Hydra recently found solace with a couple of other characters (especially Theya) but one doesn't make everything better, its such a waste that such amazing unique if not powerful mechanics are so hard to slot in with other characters!

The characters alone are amazing! These non-caste Mercs are my favorite cards because they offer fun and unique gameplay. Situational buffs that usually don't come out in other characters very often - not so to the point bonuses so that you actually have to think to get the best out of your game. Why not?! It drives me nuts that they have so little synergy with others.

2-2 / Do you find Other decks efficient ? In which compartments of the game and why ?

Their efficiency are limited to the characters they can play with, weren't Mercenaries the adaptive ones? It would be great if they could continue adapting instead of outright being stand alone characters who are intended to support other guilds, which they honestly aren't doing too hot in neither.

2-3 / What are the strengths and weaknesses of Other decks ?

It really depends, a Fog Hydra beatdown deck is scary - but only if the right characters are slotted in with it. Strengths I would say is the adaptability of these cards, Fog Hydra just might be able to squeeze in with say, Earth Elemental, but they hardly work together, they work away from each other in that sense. So that strength is limited and thus becomes a weakness.

The fact that their only strength isn't as great as portrayed becomes a weakness to them.

2-4 / What would you like to see in Other decks next release ?

More non-caste mercs that actually work together, not character-specific, but merc cards and characters that complement each other, these characters don't make good support anymore because guilded characters love their guilded cards, its time, in my honest opinion, that the non-caste Mercs get their own strengths.

VI / Anything else?

I love the Mercenaries, they became my favorite decks to play with and against, it would be such a shame to see good creativity mess up, I really do sincerely hope the Mercenaries get the push they need to grow stronger with the game and not get left behind.

Name/IGN: Trismegistos33

Age/Gender: 19/Male

Location: Malaysia

Style of play: Fun, mostly, I try as many styles as I can, from beatdowns to control
and from time to time I try mixing different game styles to find new fields of the game - it's one big science experiment for me. wink

Experience in Eredan and and previous card games:
I started Eredan a few months ago, my love for trading card games such as Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon to some extreme never died out. I'm a casual gamer who gets competitive only every once in awhile and I've been looking for a clan to socialize, craft theories and decks and overall have a good time with, it would be a nice, new touch playing with other people besides my RL friends smile Hope to hear from you guys soon!
